Most Poetic Songs

Monument by A Day to Remember is one of the most poetic songs ever. There are a lot of poetic devices used in this song other than alliteration and imagery. There is internal rhyme where is says "Get so far away from here with you my dear." The internal rhyme is here and and dear. This is also narrative poetry. This is a story about a boy going through life with many fears and not knowing what to do because he wants to stay, but he also wants to live out his dream. There is also a symbol in the song. The symbol is when it says "it's been a long road." This is a symbol of life saying how nothing much has changed and he is forced to live the life he is living, but only at the moment. There is also a metaphor in the beginning of the song. The metaphor is "Nobody knows the troubles I've seen. In a van on a soapbox for the world to see." This is a metaphor of all the wrong things that people do to others, that no one really notices but it happening right in front of them. These are just a few examples as to why this song should be one of the top 100 most poetic songs.

Worst Song Ever

Fish Heads by: Dr. Demento

Fish Heads by Dr. Demento is the worst song ever made poetically. There is no rhyme scheme. There is no allusion. The majority of the song just says, “Fish head, fish heads, roly poly fish heads.” There is no real point to the song. The only poetic device used in the song is humor. When listening to the song, the voice is really high and annoying. There is actually one other poetic device they use, which coincides with the humor. This poetic device is personification. One example of personification used in the song is when they say, “Roly poly fish heads are never seen, drinking cappuccino in Italian restaurants, with oriental women.” This is personification because fish heads can’t drink cappuccinos with oriental women. These are the only two poetic devices used in this song. Other than these couple examples, there is nothing good in any way shape or form in the song poetically speaking.

Pun through Loss thorugh Country Music

God's Will by Martina McBride has one major pun. The title of the song is the pun. The boy in the song's name is Will. He is also God's will, because he is handicapped and it is God's will to help the weak. This is a pun because it is a play on words. The play on words is the fact that since he is crippled, then he is God's will, and the fact that his name is Will. So, this is the only pun in this song.

Euphony through Loss through Country Music

"Independence Day" by Martina McBride is a song with a lot of euphony. One example of a euphony is when it says, "She tried to pretend he wasn't drinking again, but daddy left the proof on her cheek." This is a softer way of saying that the father in the song is an abusive alcoholic. Another example of euphony is when it says "Well she lit up the sky that fourth of July. By the time that the firemen come, they just put out the flames and took down some names." This is a softer way of saying that the mom killed herself and the father.

Social Relevance through loss through Country Music

"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)" by: Alan Jackson

Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turing) is a very emotional song. It has to do with the tragedy of 9/11. On that day, I watched the whole thing on T.V. in my classroom in Kentucky. I did not know what was really going on; I just knew that it was not a good thing. When I got older, I heard this song on the radio and it really made me think about 9/11 more. I did not even know what was happening that day; the day that many people lost their loved ones. To this day people are talking about it, and who is to blame for the whole thing. I do not understand why people are so wrapped up in the blame. It should not matter who did it. What should matter is how we went through the whole situation, and how we united as a nation. Even though we do not have our twin towers, we do have a stronger and more connected country compared to before the tragedy. I do not know if our country would be any different today if 9/11 did not happen, but I think it is a strong memory which we can always remember through this song.

"If You're Reading This" by: Tim McGraw

If You’re Reading this is a song about a man that dies in the war and the song is a letter he writes to his wife. Right now, my brother is in the war doing Airborne for the army in Texas. He does not have a wife or anything, but it makes me think of who he would write to and what he would say. I do not get to talk to him much, but my mom does all the time. He has to “take care of the border.” He loves making jokes, and his sergeants love him. He is so happy to be fighting for his country, which makes all of us happy. He loves his family with all his heart and soul. I think he would write a letter to all of us, but will say something different to each of us. I do not know what he would write to me. I think all he would say is that he loves me and hopes I do not make the same failures in life that he did. He has always looked out for me and taken care of me, because he knows that my sister did not succeed, and I am now my family’s last hope. I just hope I do not fail him.

"Jesus, Take The Wheel" by: Carrie Underwood

Jesus, Take the Wheel, is a song that talks about personal tragedies and religion. I am not the biggest fan of religion. I will never understand why people would put their lives into something that does not exist. If you see your life flash before your eyes right before a car runs into you, how many people will really fold their hands and say a prayer to “God?” My mother and I have many different views when it comes to religion and we argue about it a lot. This also makes me think of my friend Emily Lynnn Smith. She got in a car crash on her way to the airport in Ohio to come visit her mom and I. It was a really rainy night and it was her and her dad. Her dad was in the passenger seat. Before they knew it, an 18-wheeler comes and hits the driver side of the car. Emily was killed and her father is paralyzed for life. Even though I do not believe in God, when I heard this song, all I thought was, “I hope she said a prayer of forgiveness for all her wrongs, just in case Heaven is real.” Rest In Peace Emily.

Self-written Songs

My Reality Nightmare

It's dark and I'm tired
So I'll say goodnight
And sleep this night away

All of a sudden
I hear someone upstairs
They are moving closer to my resting place

I can hear them coming near me
I don't know what to do
So I just stay in a fake slumber

I can tell it's a man
By the way he loves me
And he just can't control it

My blankets are off of me
I can feel his breath on me
I can hear the zipping of his pants,
And the zipping of my innocence

I can tell it's a man
By the way he is speaking
He's saying he loves me
And he just can't control it

I wake to him
Deep down inside me
It just doesn't make sense

I know who he is
By the note that he left for me
Oh Father! Why Father!
Why would you do this to me?

I can tell it's a man
By the way he is speaking
He's saying he loves me
And he just can't control it

Then I wake up
To find it a dream...
To find it a nightmare

It made me go crazy
But I got over it
Now I'm just sitting
All by myself singing...

I thought it was a man
By the way he was speaking
I swore he said he loves me
And he just can't control it

But I was wrong...
But I was wrong...
But I was wrong...

Allegory through loss through country music

If You're Going Through Hell by: Rodney Atkins is a form of an allegory. This is a story about what you do if you're going through hell. The symbolism in the song is the man is not literally going through hell, he is just having a rough time in his life. Since he has gone through this, he is giving the lesson on how to "go through hell" without it getting worse or without the "devil even knowing you're there."

Ambiguity through loss through country music

Any Man of Mine by: Shania Twain is an example of ambiguity. When you listen to the song your first thought is that this person only cares about finding the perfect guy in every way shape and form. She almost is portrayed as a "witch" or even "conceited." If you listen to it a couple more times you could also think that she only wants some of these things or maybe she already has this guy and she's showing him off. This shows many meanings because you don't know why she is saying that any man of hers has to be this way.

Allusion through loss through country music

Don't Take The Girl by: Tim McGraw shows allusion. There is only one obvious example of it in the song. In the first stanza of the song the boy is talking to his dad. The boy said he would never like the neighbor's daughter, but the dad says basically that the boy could end up liking her one day.

Irony through country music through loss

I Got A Brand New Girlfriend by: Steve Holy shows irony inside and out of the song. Usually, when you get dumped by your girlfriend/boyfriend you tend to wallow in your own misery instead of going right out getting a new girlfriend. The music video for this song also shows irony. In the video, his new girlfriend is a blow up doll. The ex-girlfriend thinks it's a real person and gets extremely jealous.

Stay by: Sugarland once again, is irony. The song is about a girl who is in love with a married man, and doesn't want him to leave her. The majority of the song is explaining her wanting him to stay, but then there's a twist. Near the end, she explains how she doesn't need him like she said she did before, and she says how she needs to just move on.

Paradox through country music through loss

In I Feel Bad by: Rascal Flatts, there is one obvious example of a paradox. The last line of the first stanza is, "I feel bad that I don't feel bad." This is saying that someone feels bad that they don't feel bad about not hurting when their loved one is leaving them. This is a paradox because if you feel bad that you don't feel bad, then technically you do feel bad.

Personification through country music through loss

In I Need You Now by: Lady Antebellum, there is one main example of personification. The very first line says, "picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor." You can't have memories scattered on the floor because memories are abstract.

In Stupid Boy by: Keith Urban, there are two examples of personification. The first stanza says, "A perfect prayer in a desperate hour." A girl can't be a prayer, because a prayer isn't a solid thing. A second example is in the first line of the second stanza when it says, "She laid her heart and soul right in your hands." You can't literally put your heart and soul into someone's hands.

Point Of View Through Loss Through Country Music

Stealing Cinderella By Chuck Wicks (1st stanza and chorus)

I came to see her daddy for sit down man to man
It wasn't any secret i'd be asking for her hand
I guess that's why he left me waiting in the living room by myself
with at least a dozen pictures of her sitting on a shelf

She was playing Cinderella
She was riding her first bike
Bouncing on the bed and looking for a pillow fight
Running through the sprinkler with a big popsicle grin
Dancing with her dad, looking up at him
In her eyes i'm Prince Charming
But to him i'm just some fella
riding in and stealing Cinderella

It shows 1st person narrative mode when it says, "I came to see her daddy for sit down man to man" in the first stanza. It also shows 3rd person narrative in the chorus where it says, "She was playing Cinderella."

You'll Think Of Me by Keith Urban (chorus)

Take your records, take your freedom
Take your memories, I don't need 'em
Take your space and take your reasons
But you'll think of me
And take your cat and leave my sweater
'Cause we have nothin' left to weather
In fact I'll feel a whole lot better
But you'll think of me.

It shows 1st person narrative when it says, "I don't need 'em" in the chorus. It also shows the 2nd person narrative when it says, "You'll think of me" in the last line of the chorus. The chorus also shows a stream of consciousness because when he is saying these words, it shows he's thinking of all the things to give back to her.

Concrete Angel by Martina McBride (whole song)

She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with linen and lace, oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul, caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Throughout the whole song it uses "she" which is put under 2nd person narrative. Unlike most songs, this one also shows omniscience which is throughout the whole entire song.

My Give A Damn's Busted by Jo Dee Messina (first stanza)

Well, you filled up my head
With so many lies
Twisted my heart
Till something snapped inside
I'd like to give it one more try
But my give a damn's busted

1st person narrative is shown in the second to last line where it says, "I'd like to give it one more try." It also shows 2nd person narrative where it says "Well, you filled up my head," in the very first line of the stanza.

hyperbole through loss through Country Music

Kerosene by: Miranda Lambert
I'm waitin' on the sun to set
Cause yesterday ain't over yet
I started smoking cigarettes
There's nothing else to do I guess.
Dusty roads ain't made for walking
Spinning tires ain't made for stoppin'
I'm giving up on love cause love's given up on me

I gave it everything I had
And everything I got was bad
Life ain't hard but it's too long
To live it like some country song
Trade the truth in for a lie
Cheating really ain't a crime
I'm giving up on love cause love's given up on me

Forget your high society I'm soakin' it in kerosene
Light 'em up and watch them burn
Teach them what they need to learn, ha
Dirty hands ain't made for shakin'
Ain't a rule that ain't worth breakin'
Well, I'm givin' up on love cause loves given up on me

Now I don't hate the one who left you
You can't hate someone who's dead
He's out there holdin' on to someone
I'm holding up my smokin' gun
I'll find somewhere to lay my blame
The day she changes her last name
Well, I'm givin' up on love cause love's given up on me
Well, I'm givin' up on love
Hey, love's given up on me

Alliteration through loss through Country Music

Stealing Cinderella by: Chuck Wicks
I came to see her daddy for sit down man to man
It wasn't any secret i'd be asking for her hand
I guess that's why he left me waiting in the living room by myself
with at least a dozen pictures of her sitting on a shelf

- Chorus -

She was playing Cinderella
She was riding her first bike
Bouncing on the bed and looking for a pillow fight
Running through the sprinkler with a big popsicle grin
Dancing with her dad, looking up at him
In her eyes i'm Prince Charming
But to him i'm just some fella
riding in and stealing Cinderella

I leaned in towards those pictures to get a better look at one
When I heard a voice behind me say "Now, ain't she something, son?"
I said "Yes, she quite a woman"
and he just stared at me
Then I realized that in his eyes she would always be

Playing Cinderella
Riding her first bike
Bouncing on the bed and looking for a pillow fight
Running through the sprinkler with a big popsicle grin
Dancing with her dad, looking up at him
In her eyes i'm Prince Charming
But to him i'm just some fella
riding in and stealing Cinderella

He slapped me on the shoulder
Then he called her in the room
When she threw her arms around him
That's when I could see it too

She was playing cinderella
Riding her first bike
Bouncing on the bed and looking for a pillow fight
Running through the sprinkler with a big popsicle grin
Dancing with her dad, looking up at him
If he gives me a hard time
I can't blame the fella
I'm the one who's stealing Cinderella"

Butterfly Kisses by: Tim McGraw
There's two things I know for sure
She was sent here from heaven and she's Daddy's little girl
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes
And I thank God for all of the joy in my life
Oh, but most of all for..

Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer
Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk beside the pony Daddy, it's my first ride
I know the cake looks funny Daddy but I sure tried"
Oh, with all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right
To deserve a hug every morning and butterfly kisses at night

Sweet sixteen today
And she's lookin' like her mamma a little more every day
One part woman, the other part girl
To perfume and make-up, from ribbons and curls
Trying her wings out in a great big world
But I remember...

Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer
Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair
You know how much I love you Daddy
But if you don't mind I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time
Oh, with all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right
To deserve her love every morning and butterfly kisses at night

Oh the precious times
Oh, like the wind the years go by
Precious butterfly
Spread your wings and fly

She'll change her name today
and she'll make a promise and I'll give her away
Standing in the bride room just staring at her
She asked me what I'm thinking and I said "I'm not sure,
I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl"
And she leaned over...and gave me...

Butterfly kisses with her mamma there
Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk me down the aisle Daddy, it's just about time
Does my wedding gown look pretty Daddy? Daddy don't cry"
Oh, with all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right
To deserve her love every morning and butterfly kisses

I couldn't ask God for more
Man, this is what love is
I know I've gotta let her go, but I'll always remember
Every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses at night

Just A Dream by: Carrie Underwood
It was two weeks after the day she turned 18
all dressed in white
going to the church that night
She had his box of letters in the passenger seat
A six pence in her shoe
Something borrowed, something blue
And when the church doors opened up wide
She put her veil down trying to hide the tears
Oh she just couldn't believe it
She heard the trumpets from the military band
And the flowers fell out of her hands

Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever
Now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

The preacher man said "Let us bow our heads and pray"
"Lord please lift his soul and heal this hurt"
Then the congregation all stood up and sang
The saddest song that she ever heard
Then they handed her a folded up flag
And she held on to all she had left of him
oh and what could've been
Then the guns rang one last shot
And it felt like a bullet in her heart

Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever
Now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever
Now I'll never know
oh I'll never know
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream
Oh this is just a dream
Just a dream
Yeah
Yeah

Imagery through loss through country music

The song Hurry Home has a lot of imagery. One example is in the first line which says, “He’s been
sitting by the phone since she left.” Another example is when the last line of the
first statement says, “And then he softly sings,” which helps you see that he
is singing the chorus while playing his guitar, which is said in the third and
fourth lines in the first stanza. In the first line of the sixth stanza, it
says, “She was just outside a bar in New York City.” Anyone can easily see a
girl sitting in a bar in the city. In the fourth line of the same stanza it
says, “But she dialed up that old number, and let it ring,” which is simply saying
that she called someone on her phone. The last lines of the song say, “He
walked in just in time to hear her say, Dad I’m on my way,” which helps you see
the dad walk in the room to hear her say that on the answering machine.

Travelin’ Soldier by: the Dixie Chicks is another country song that shows a lot of
imagery. The whole first stanza is talking about how a soldier “Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair” (stanza 1 line 4). A person can picture the girl giving “him a smile” (stanza 1 line 5). In the first line of the second stanza a person can see a girl and a soldier sit “on the pier.” The last line in the chorus helps you picture the letter saying “the soldier’s coming home.” The whole fourth stanza has a person picture a girl getting a bunch of letters saying things like, “When it's gettin' kinda rough over here I think of that day, sittin' down at the pier And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile Don't worry, but I won't be able to write for awhile” (stanza 4 lines 7-10). The sixth stanza helps the person picture a girl at a football game and a person reading off names of soldiers who passed away.

Theme/Genre Project

For the genre I am going to use Country. I am choosing country because I was raised to be a "country girl" and it was the first genre of music I was ever exposed to. I also chose Country music because it is the one thing that has always helped me through my hard times in life. The theme I am choosing is loss. I am choosing loss because it is the most inspirational lyrics that are found in country music. The saddest songs that are heard are the ones that help us the most.
